I recommend NaNoWriMo!! It's a great way to write under pressure, which, if you get far enough in this business, is what you'll be doing every day. And it's a good way to increase your ability to type quickly, while keeping your thoughts going. Important thing to note, if you're in school: don't sacrifice school time for writing time with NaNo just to hit 50K words. Instead, focus as much as possible on doing both, and when the month's over, you'll find you're able to focus more on school than you were before NaNoWriMo That's what happened for me! I also used NaNoWriMo to try a new genre, and test a big idea. It's great for experimenting. Also helps if you can make an idea that doesn't have to resort to NaNo tricks, like throwing in pirates or robots for no reason whatsoever. Seriously, it's been done.
